Monthly update on capital gains, dividends, and other life events
So, here we come again, after a lazy month where I have written only 4 posts, I present you a monthly update for May 2022 ๐.
For this week it is going to be the following:

๐ค Dividends update
This monthโs dividend was the more important as we entered the bear territory (when the index is down 20% or more from itโs all time high) on May 20th, 2022. It was more important because it would enable me to buy more of $VOO, and other dividend stocks. I was expecting to make $1.5k this month, and I ended up making $1,272.19. It was because my excel tracker doesnโt work properly because there were few manual data points entered (basically I made a mistake). I received a total of 9 dividend cheques from the following O ($ 89.34), JEPI (), QYLD ($ 341.71), BST ($ 217.63), STAG ($ 31.29), AGNC ($ 135.08), AAPL ($ 49.30), COST ($42.39) and JPM ($ 125.32). After the month of May, the history of my dividend looks like this:
๐ฐ Trade news
This week was a big trade month. I poured $10,082.67 into the stock market (basically trying to buy the dip). My cash position decreased from 6% to around 3%. So, I will try to add to the cash position (make it to at least 6% again) using my dividends and active income. I made a total of 10 trades of $U with the price ranging from $68 to $38 and amounts ranging from $135 to $4,000. I purchased a total of $8,486.18. It went down after a lowered guidance for next quarter and this year. If you want to learn more about it you can see it here. I made 20 trades of $VOO ranging from $15 to $500. I purchased a total of $800. I sold out of $NUSI and increased my position in $JEPI, $BST, and $QYLD (one income ETFs to others). I also made re-invested my dividends in JPM, AAPL, and COST. Here is the snapshot of my $U trades. This month was a big month in trades, and rightly so.
๐ฅน Capital gains
In terms of capital gain, may was not as bad. I was down as much as 11% at one point of the time. YTD I am beating the $SPY or S&P 500 index by around 7%. YTD I am down 7.35% while S&P 500 is down around 14.86%. The thing I like about my portfolio is it is a solid defensive portfolio during a market downturn. During an upturn, it might not go up like the market and during downturn it doesnโt go down like the market. Also, given I am down around 50% on $U (my top holding) and still beating the index, I am proud of the portfolio that I build.
๐ซ Life events
I am lazy, but I was busy. I was in Thailand ๐น๐ญ for the first week of May and I was in Turkey ๐น๐ท for the third week of May. Here comes the lazy part, I wanted to have a section with travels, I even started writing about the Turkey trip, but I couldnโt finish it. Hopefully soon. But, here are a few pics from my trip :)
So, thatโs all for this month. I hope this month will be kinder to market - will see more greens but if it isnโt I am ready with my 3% cash position. If it goes green, maybe time to add more to cash position.
